Memories of the Subsidy Period: A Journey Through Time to Preserve the Essence of Vietnamese Tet

On the morning of January 14, Dai Nam University's campus was filled with the vibrant atmosphere and nostalgic charm of the spring festival themed "Memories of the Subsidy Period." The setting transported attendees back to a time of rustic simplicity, evoking the essence of Tet during a challenging historical period. Every corner of the event vividly recreated the Tet of yesteryears: traditional subsidy-era stalls, the fragrant aroma of bánh chưng wafting through the air, echoes of folk music, captivating cultural performances, and a retro fashion show by both faculty and students.

The Cake of Kindness: 14 Years of Love and Connection

A standout feature of the festival was the “The Cake of Kindness” program, a beautiful tradition that has been part of Dai Nam University for 14 years. This activity involves not only making traditional bánh chưng but also sharing love and support with those in need.

During the opening ceremony, Ms. Cao Thi Hoa, Vice Chairwoman of the University Council, shared emotionally:
"Tet is a special time to remind us of humanity and the value of sharing. The Chung Cake: A Piece of Kindness program is not only a cherished tradition but also a declaration that true abundance lies not in material possessions but in a loving heart."

Every Banh Chung contained more than sticky rice, green beans, and pork; it held memories of a difficult era, teaching younger generations that true happiness comes from giving.

A nostalgic journey to reserve Tet and national identity

The “Memories of the Subsidy Period” theme did more than recreate the Tet of the past—it bridged the generational gap, helping young people appreciate and respect traditional cultural values. Activities such as making Banh Chung and reimagining the Tet atmosphere of the subsidy era allowed students to experience the simplicity and resilience of their grandparents' and parents' lifestyles. Through these experiences, students learned the value of cherishing life’s simple pleasures, practicing thrift, and fostering compassion and sharing.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Nhan, Head of the Student Affairs Office, expressed his excitement: "The festival’s atmosphere is fantastic! I’m deeply moved to see students immersing themselves in these activities. It’s not just a playground but a vivid lesson on culture and humanity."

Vu Thuy Anh, a Business Administration student from K17, shared her thoughts: "This is my first time attending such a meaningful Tet festival. It feels like traveling back in time to the subsidy era my grandparents and parents often spoke of."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, Dean of the Faculty of Soft Skills Training, shared: "The Chung Cake: A Piece of Kindness program teaches students not just how to make cakes, but also how to embody the spirit of sharing. I believe each Banh Chung given away carries a message of humanity, helping young people mature."

Educational value from the subsidy-period Tet

The festival was not only a nostalgic portrayal of a challenging historical period but also a source of valuable lessons for the younger generation. Through the imagery of Tet during the subsidy era, students discovered that happiness does not come from material wealth but from unity, love, and sharing within families and communities.

These memories of hardship inspired students to appreciate what they have, embrace responsibility, and preserve the nation’s cultural identity in modern times.

A Celebration of Joy and Connection

The morning’s excitement peaked with a tug-of-war competition among faculty members. Cheers and laughter filled the campus as these “accidental athletes” gave their all, delivering moments of pure joy. Cultural performances blending traditional folk music with modern youthfulness added a lively and emotional touch to the event.

As the festival concluded, its warm and meaningful spirit lingered in everyone’s hearts. The event was more than just a celebration—it was an opportunity for Dai Nam University’s faculty and students to preserve the essence of Vietnamese Tet, spread love, and nurture traditional cultural values, inspiring the younger generation to live more positively and compassionately.
