From Dai Nam University looking out to the world - When English becomes the living language of Vietnamese students
The government has just designated English as the second language in Vietnamese schools - a strategic decision, opening up great opportunities for the young generation of Vietnam on the path of integration and development. However, putting that policy into practice is not easy, especially when many students start university with very limited English skills.
In that context, Dai Nam University (DNU) is gradually building a learning environment where English is used naturally, friendly and effectively – not only in class but also in students' daily activities.
From the 2025–2026 academic year, DNU will welcome 200 international students from India to study Medicine. The presence of Indian students – who speak English as their primary language – creates an open, international and inspiring learning environment.
English clubs, afternoon teas, and Indian-Vietnamese student talk shows have become natural spaces for Vietnamese students to practice, communicate, and make friends in English. Learning a foreign language thus becomes more intimate, more practical, and brings real joy.
Not only creating an environment, DNU also shows a clear commitment to learners:
Medical and Pharmaceutical students must achieve a TOEIC output standard of 500 points or higher before graduation.
This is a standard that the school has consistently maintained over the years – not to create pressure, but to enable students to truly be able to use English in their studies, research and work, especially in fields related to health sciences, where international communication is a must.
According to statistics from the DNU Career Support Center, students with good English skills often have higher employment opportunities and higher starting salaries than the average. Many alumni are now working in hospitals, businesses and organizations with foreign elements, thanks to their solid foreign language skills and confidence in communication.
Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Thi Thu Giang, Principal of Dai Nam University, shared:
"At Dai Nam University, we do not consider English as just a subject, but as a special tool to help students expand their knowledge and integrate with the world. Every student needs to understand that knowing English is not only for graduating, but to go further - to their own future."
With the philosophy of "Devoted to students so that students can have jobs right after graduation and have good income", Dai Nam University is firmly moving towards real internationalization - starting from English proficiency, to professional skills and professional working attitude.
At Dai Nam University, English is more than just a subject. It is the language of opportunity, of confidence and of the future.
