Prof. Dr. Luu Ngoc Hoat - Vice Principal of Dai Nam University: "Training doctors must be a revolution"

“Training doctors is not just about teaching how to treat diseases. It is a journey of training personality, capacity and responsibility for human life.” That is the affirmation of Prof. Dr. , People's Teacher Luu Ngoc Hoat - Vice Principal of Dai Nam University, former Vice Principal of Hanoi Medical University - who has devoted his whole life to the cause of medical education.
Dai Nam University takes Health as its core training axis with the majors of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy.
New thinking: Training doctors according to competency standards for practice
With a clear understanding that medical education is to train doctors to take care of health , Dai Nam University firmly follows a strategic direction: building a doctor training model aimed at achieving competency standards to be able to take the exam for a practice license, not just training to pass the graduation exam .
Medical students need to be guided by a clearly oriented training program that answers five core questions:
- Students need to learn?
- Where do you study?
- How to study?
- For how long?
- And how to evaluate the level of standard?
Prof. Dr. BS , People's Teacher Luu Ngoc Hoat - Vice Principal shared at the opening week for staff, lecturers and employees at the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year.
From there, the school designed the training program around the knowledge - attitude - skills (KAS) components, distributed according to each learning stage: from theory, simulation practice , practice at the hospital, to learning in the community. Modern methods such as flipped classroom, training by organ system module, objective assessment test OSCE/OSPE are applied to ensure that students not only know but also do - correctly, sufficiently and accurately.
Teaching how to learn - Learning for lifelong practice
Medical education cannot follow the trend of "cramming" while global medical knowledge is updated every hour. With only 6 years of study, the most important thing is to help students know how to learn - learn for life, learn selectively and learn to practice responsibly.
Prof. Dr. Luu Ngoc Hoat : "Training doctors must be a revolution"
In the era of precision, personalized and evidence-based medicine, Dai Nam University is one of the pioneers in applying artificial intelligence (AI), eLearning, flipped classrooms, and mentors in teaching and learning. Students are given access to open learning resources and technology platforms, thereby proactively exploring and updating knowledge.
Solving the problem of lecturers and teaching organization
A major challenge for medical universities today is the shortage of basic medical faculty to recruit, mainly because medical students today prefer to study clinical specialties.
Faced with that reality, Dai Nam University builds an open teaching ecosystem, strengthens connections, cooperation and trains its own teaching staff.

Teaching organization is also innovated in the direction of integration , aiming at competency standards, consistently applying teaching /learning according to the module approach and assigning clear teaching / learning tasks to make it easy to manage, effective and economical.
Reach out to the world
The 2025–2026 academic year will mark a major turning point in the international integration strategy of the University . This is the year when the first batch of Indian medical students will officially enroll at the University under the program recognized by the National Medical Commission of India (NMC). The School of Medicine has also been listed in the World Directory of Medical Universities (WDOMS - https://www.wdoms.org/ ).
In the 2025-2026 school year, Dai Nam University will welcome its first international medical students.
This affirms the increasingly growing international position of Dai Nam University in the field of medical training and sets higher requirements for training programs, teaching staff and training infrastructure. With thorough preparation and a clear strategy, Dai Nam is fully capable of undertaking a new mission: not only training doctors for Vietnam, but also becoming a reliable medical education center in the region.
Practice, not just degrees
“We do not train students to get a degree. We train them to be able to practice – with the courage, knowledge and personality of a real doctor , ” emphasized Professor , Doctor , Doctor, People's Teacher Luu Ngoc Hoat.
That is the commitment and also the guideline for the new medical training model at Dai Nam University – a serious, systematic and humane educational revolution. A long and challenging journey but worthy of the noble mission of those who train doctors – those who will protect the lives of millions of people in the future.
