In the context of the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and speech processing technology globally, the ability of university students to participate in research and create practical technological products while still in university has become an important measure of the quality of education at a modern university.

At Dai Nam University, student scientific research activities are not limited to academic topics on paper, but are gradually becoming an environment for students to explore their own abilities, solve practical problems, and access new technologies from around the world. The journey of the group of students from the Faculty of Information Technology with their project "Building a speaker identity authentication system based on voice biometrics" is a prime example of this.

From a classroom assignment to a research topic on "Made in Vietnam" technology.

Winning first prize at the university-level Student Scientific Research Conference, a team of students including Hoang Phuong Hue, Vu Minh Quoc, and Hoang Van Dung impressed with their AI system for processing Vietnamese speech, which has high applicability in many practical fields such as banking, customer service call centers, telemedicine, and security.

What's special is that this topic didn't originate from some far-fetched idea, but rather from real-world projects that students encountered during their studies.

Hoang Phuong Hue, the research team leader, shared: “Initially, our team participated in a project related to analyzing customer sentiment based on audio conversations of a chain of beauty salons. During the data processing, we realized that simply analyzing the content wasn't enough; we needed to know exactly who was speaking, what their emotions were, and what they were saying.

From these very practical concerns, the group began to delve deeper into the field of Vietnamese speech processing – a technological area with significant potential for development. And from here, the students' scientific research journey officially began.

Dai Nam University students master AI technology and speech processing.

Instead of opting for a single approach, the team developed the V-BioVoice system – a solution that integrates multiple speech processing steps into a single complete system. The system is capable of cleaning audio, separating multiple speakers in a conversation, identifying speakers using voice biometrics, and converting speech into text with the speaker's name.

To build this system, the team had to process a massive amount of Vietnamese data – a challenge even for many specialized research groups today.

To complete the project, the team had to build a massive dataset of speech for analysis with the assistance of their supervising lecturer, Ms. Le Thi Thuy Trang.

Student Vu Minh Quoc stated: “Currently, there are quite few Vietnamese audio datasets available for speech processing. Therefore, our team had to both research models and independently process and build data to suit the practical problem.”

This process not only helps students improve their professional skills but also cultivates research thinking, self-learning abilities, problem-solving skills, and teamwork skills. These are all core skills for high-quality human resources in the digital age.

Scientific research – a “second classroom” that helps students grow.

One of the greatest values of student scientific research is the creation of a hands-on learning environment where students learn through real experiences, real projects, and real problems. For this research group, the process of working on the project is not only a journey of building a technological product, but also a journey of professional growth and development.

Student Hoang Van Dung shared: “When participating in real-world projects, we get to experience technologies and processes similar to working for a company. Being exposed to the actual requirements of clients and pondering solutions – that makes me love my field of study and prevents me from feeling lost when entering the job market.”

That is precisely the goal that Dai Nam University is steadfastly pursuing: bringing students closer to professional practice right from their university studies; transforming the learning process into a journey of discovery, creativity, and creating value for society.

The research team had periods of serious work and effective collaboration.

When scientific research is no longer "a select few's playground"

No longer an activity exclusively for "exceptionally outstanding" students, scientific research at Dai Nam University is gradually becoming an open learning environment where all students have the opportunity to try their hand if they have a learning spirit and dare to start.

What is valuable in the story of the group of students from the Faculty of Information Technology is not only the award or the international paper, but also their proactive spirit, their willingness to tackle difficult problems, and their perseverance in pursuing their goals to the end.

The team members weren't in the same class or year. They met while working on a project and decided to collaborate on scientific research. This natural and relaxed connection created a cohesive team that complemented each other's strengths.

Behind the intense research sessions were team meetings where, as the team members jokingly shared, "5 minutes of work, the rest is for chatting, eating, and having fun." But it was precisely this positive spirit of teamwork that helped the team maintain energy throughout months of continuous research.

The mark of scientific research by Dai Nam University students on academic forums.

Before winning first prize at the university level, the group's project had been presented at several major scientific conferences such as the National REV 2025 Conference held at the University of Technology and the International ICCIT 2025 Conference held at BUV.

The fact that students can participate in publishing research at specialized academic forums demonstrates the professional competence, independent research capabilities, and the increasingly practical and internationally-standardized quality of training at Dai Nam University.

According to Ms. Le Thi Thu Trang, the group's supervising lecturer, "What is noteworthy is the students' spirit of learning, initiative, and ability to conduct independent research. Despite having to approach a field with many difficulties and limited specialized data for the Vietnamese language, they persevered in experimenting, continuously optimizing, and perfecting the system."

The school provides all the necessary conditions for students to conduct research and innovate.

Behind every successful research project is the support of faculty members, specialized departments, and the university's policies encouraging scientific research.

At Dai Nam University, students are given opportunities to access real-world projects from an early stage; receive close guidance from lecturers; participate in conferences and academic events; and are supported in connecting with businesses and developing research ideas oriented towards practical applications.

The group of students emotionally shared: “We are very grateful to the University and the Faculty of Information Technology for creating opportunities for students to participate in real-world projects even while still in university. These opportunities have given us the foundation to develop this research topic.”

In its applied university development strategy, Dai Nam University identifies student scientific research not only as an academic activity but also as a foundation for fostering innovative thinking, enhancing professional skills, and building a generation of confident students in the technological era.

From a practical problem in the classroom to a topic published at national and international scientific conferences, the journey of the group of students from the Faculty of Information Technology has shown that when students are given opportunities, properly supported, and learn in an environment rich in practical experience, they can absolutely create technological products that bring value to the community and society.
