The Chinese character spelling competition – a solid foundation for the language development journey of first-year students.

On December 9th, 2025, the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture - Dai Nam University successfully organized the "2025 Chinese Spelling Contest" at Lecture Hall 1. This annual academic activity for first-year students attracted over 30 participating teams. It served not only as a platform to test their Chinese character proficiency but also as an opportunity for students to build a solid language foundation before embarking on future international study programs in China.

The competition was a success, with a total of 33 participating teams – the largest number in any season.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Vo Thi Minh Ha, Head of the Department of Chinese Language and Culture, emphasized: “The competition is organized to create a serious training activity, helping students consolidate their knowledge of Chinese characters from the very first semesters. This is a practical academic activity that helps students practice their classroom knowledge and develop critical thinking skills, language reflexes, and teamwork abilities – important skills for students participating in international exchange programs.”

Dr. Vo Thi Minh Ha - Head of the Department of Chinese Language and Culture, Dai Nam University, delivered the opening speech for the competition.

33 teams compete - the vibrant academic spirit of first-year "newcomers".

Although organized only for first-year students, this year's competition successfully attracted more than 33 teams from the K19 classes of the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture, with three main sections: Listening and writing Chinese characters; Writing by radicals; and Guessing the meaning - thinking about Chinese characters. This is also a testament to the students' eagerness to learn, their desire for self-improvement, and their need to interact in an environment rich in cultural identity as they develop their foreign language skills.

The team members worked together seamlessly to overcome the challenges of the competition.

Not only did the contestants overcome their stage fright, but they were also judged by tough judges.

Amidst the vibrant atmosphere and enthusiastic cheers from the audience, the competing teams demonstrated their ability to memorize, analyze word structures, and work together seamlessly. The large number of teams with consistently high professional standards prompted the organizers to add two supplementary rounds to select the most talented participants. After three intense and challenging rounds, the teams with the best results were officially announced:

1. Joint First Prize: TT 19-17, TT 19-24
2. Second Prize: TT 19-25
3. Third Prize: TT 19-08, TT 19-27, TT 19-31
4. Honorable Mention: TT 19-13, TT 19-15, TT 19-28, TT 19-30

Every stroke of the pen, every answer in the competition reflects the students' love for Chinese characters – a language deeply rooted in a vast cultural and historical heritage. This also serves as an important foundation to help students gain more confidence in their upcoming semesters in China.
