Dai Nam University’s National Defense Semester: A Journey of Growth and Fostering Patriotism

The National Defense Semester at Dai Nam University (DNU) is more than just a required course; it is a voyage of instilling willpower, discipline, and a strong feeling of patriotism in each student. It is where young people learn to live with discipline and self-awareness.

Challenges – A Launchpad for Resilience

Initially, many students struggled with the military environment, which included severe timetables and hard academic and practical field instruction. However, these hurdles served as a motivator, pushing them past their boundaries.

Nguyen Phuong Anh, a student at the Faculty of English Language, stated: "I will never forget the day we practiced on the training field under the burning sun. Despite our exhaustion, the spirit of teamwork and support from the teachers enabled us to accomplish the task successfully. Those days showed me that no challenge is invincible."

Discipline – The Foundation of Growth

The National Defense Semester instills in students the values of discipline and self-awareness, which are fundamental elements not only in the military but also in everyday life. Following schedules and completing even the smallest duties helps students develop a scientific and responsible work ethic.

Ta Tuong Loc, a student at the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture, reflected: "From simple tasks like folding blankets, keeping a night watch, exercising, lining up for meals on time, to shooting practice or formation drills, I learned the value of discipline and teamwork. These are vital lessons that I will carry with me throughout my life."

Patriotism – The Eternal Flame in Young Hearts

DNU students become more proud of the nation's rich traditions and acutely conscious of their responsibility to defend the homeland through history courses, training sessions, and every drop of sweat shed on the field.

Nguyen Phuong Anh expressed: "When I stood at attention during the National Defense Sports Festival and heard the national anthem, I cried. It was a combination of pride and appreciation to those who sacrificed for the country. The National Defense Semester not only taught me how to fight, but also encouraged me to live a dedicated life and safeguard what is right."

Teamwork – The Strength of Unity

Team spirit is the bond that keeps students together throughout their journey. DNU students learnt to face obstacles together, encourage one another in accomplishing assignments, and enjoy the joy of triumph.

Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong, a student at the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture, stated: "No one can succeed alone. My colleagues showed me that as a group, the strength of each individual is enhanced. I'm glad for the days we spent training together, laughing, crying, and growing stronger."

A Message to Future Cadets

Minh Phuong advised future "cadets" ready to begin the National Defense Semester, "Treat this as an opportunity to test your boundaries. Though difficult and tiring, everything you learn will be a valuable asset throughout your life. The National Defense Semester is more than simply a course; it's a place where you can become the strongest version of yourself”
